Recipes: Maple Banana Oatmeal

In the history of this blog I have released a bunch of breakfast recipes and non of them have been healthy, vegetarian or very simple. Today we have that very thing, an oatmeal that covers a bunch of nutritional bases while also giving you lots of flavour.  Oatmeal is a seasonal thing to me, when it is warm and bright in the morning there is nothing I want less but when I get out of bed at 8:30 and it’s hardly light out and the fall wind is blowing bring on that hearty warm oatmeal.


Bob’s Red Mill Steel Cut Oats

1 Banana (peeled and cut into thin pieces)

1/2 cup Cashews

3 Cups Water

1 tbs salt

Maple Syrup (To taste)

1 tsp Cinnamon

1 tsp All Spice


In a small pot on high heat, put three cups of water and salt, bring them to a boil. Reduce heat to medium high and add your oat. You will want to watch them closely for a few minutes just to make sure the heat is right. They can tend to boil over if the heat is too high. Cook for 10-20 minutes adding cinnamon and all spice after about 5 minutes. With Steel Cut Oats the longer you cook them the softer they will become, I like cooking them for about 12 or 13 minutes so they are a little chewy almost like al dente pasta. Remove from heat and cover for five minutes.  Then serve it into bowls (this should make 3 cups of cereal and I use 1.5 cups as a serving) add your cashews, bananas and maple syrup. Stir this all together and enjoy.
